Philippines: Aboitiz sends relief to quake-hit Cebu

As of Oct. 3, the group had allocated more than 2.5 million pesos ($44,000) in assistance, distributing 11,385 litres of water, 3,600 food packs and 2,000 non-food items to 3,600 families.

Philippine conglomerate Aboitiz Group said it has mobilised relief for communities hit by last week’s Cebu earthquake, delivering food, water and essential goods while working to restore power generation in the Visayas grid.

As of Oct. 3, the group had allocated more than 2.5 million pesos ($44,000) in assistance, distributing 11,385 litres of water, 3,600 food packs and 2,000 non-food items to 3,600 families, with figures subject to change as operations continue. The company said 11 CitySavings employees in Bogo City were also affected and have received support.

AboitizPower said one generating unit at Therma Visayas Inc. has resumed operations after safety checks, helping stabilise supply to the regional grid, with full operations targeted by Monday.

Relief work is being coordinated across Aboitiz business units including Aboitiz Equity Ventures, Aboitiz Foundation, AboitizPower, Visayan Electric, UnionBank and others, alongside partner organisations such as the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation, the Philippine Red Cross Cebu chapter, the Philippine Coast Guard and the Philippine Chamber of Commerce & Industry–Lapu-Lapu City.

The Aboitiz Foundation said it will update partners and stakeholders as it expands efforts based on evolving needs, adding that employees have joined volunteer operations.

The 6.9-magnitude quake on Sept. 30 damaged homes, churches and schools in northern Cebu, prompting national and local authorities to roll out emergency assistance and safety advisories in high-risk areas.
