Philippines’ ERC Clears Alternergy’s ₱2.8bn Tanay Wind Project Interconnection

The decision allows Alternergy Tanay Wind Corp to build and operate a dedicated point-to-point transmission facility.

The Philippines’ Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has approved a ₱2.8 billion ($47.7 million) interconnection facility for Alternergy Holdings Corp’s 128 megawatt (MW) Tanay wind project in Rizal province, enabling it to link to the Luzon power grid.

The decision allows Alternergy Tanay Wind Corp (ATWC), a subsidiary of Alternergy, to build and operate a dedicated point-to-point transmission facility, comprising two double-circuit 500 kilovolt (kV) transmission lines and a 33/500 kV switchyard with a 150 MVA transformer.

The ERC endorsed a two-stage interconnection scheme, with an interim bus-in link to the existing 500 kV San Jose-Tayabas transmission line while awaiting completion of the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines’ (NGCP) planned Baras 500 kV substation, which will serve as the final connection point. The regulator directed NGCP to expedite work on the Baras facility.

“This is an innovative interconnection scheme that enables our Tanay Wind Power Project to meet its commitment under the Administration’s Green Energy Auction 2,” said Gerry P. Magbanua, president of ATWC.

Magbanua thanked NGCP and ERC, led by newly appointed chairman Francis Saturnino Juan, for back-to-back approvals covering Alternergy’s Tanay and Alabat wind projects.

The Tanay wind farm forms part of Alternergy’s goal of building 500 MW of renewable capacity by 2026.

The company, which listed on the Philippine Stock Exchange in March 2023, has a pipeline spanning wind, solar, run-of-river hydro, battery storage and offshore wind projects.
