CEBU CITY, Philippines – National University Cebu (NU Cebu) formally opened Academic Year 2025–2026 on Monday with a grand welcome celebration dubbed “Paghimamat 2025,” drawing over 1,400 students, faculty, and staff to the SM City Cebu North Wing Atrium.
The university’s annual first-day tradition set the tone for the new academic year, featuring performances, community engagement activities, and an orientation on campus life. The event also introduced new students to NU Cebu’s values of academic excellence, inclusivity, and innovation.
Administrators said “Paghimamat,” a Cebuano term for “gathering” or “meeting,” reflects the university’s strong connection to local culture and its goal of fostering a welcoming and unified learning community.
NU Cebu, a part of the National University system, continues to expand its presence in the Visayas by offering in-demand undergraduate programs including BS Accountancy, Architecture, Psychology, Computer Science, Medical Technology, and Tourism Management.
Its Senior High School program provides strands in ABM, HUMSS, and STEM, supported by a curriculum aligned with industry needs.
“Our goal is to prepare students not just for graduation, but for life and work beyond the classroom,” an NU Cebu representative said. “We emphasize employability, values-driven learning, and adaptability in a fast-changing world.”
The institution also prides itself on being a pet-friendly campus with modern facilities and a learning environment designed to prioritize safety, accessibility, and student well-being.
NU Cebu has positioned itself as a competitive choice for families seeking affordable quality education in Central Visayas.
Faculty and staff were present to guide students through the first-day experience, offering support services and introducing academic departments and student organizations.
The university said its holistic approach to education includes both academic and non-academic programs aimed at developing leadership, creativity, and a sense of community.
“Paghimamat 2025” concluded with messages of encouragement from university leaders and a call to make the school year meaningful through engagement, collaboration, and excellence.
NU Cebu opened its doors in 2022 and is one of the newest campuses under the National University network, which is part of the SM Group’s education investments.
