Sun Life to Invest Up to $70M in Hong Kong’s Bowtie, Expanding Digital Insurance Push

The fresh funding aims to fuel Bowtie’s next growth phase by strengthening its position in medical insurance.

HONG KONGSun Life Hong Kong said on Friday it will invest up to $70 million in Bowtie Life Insurance, Hong Kong’s first virtual insurer, as it looks to deepen its push into digital insurance and healthcare solutions in the city.

The fresh funding aims to fuel Bowtie’s next growth phase by strengthening its position in medical insurance and expanding preventive healthcare services, the companies said in a joint statement.

“Sun Life has been a long-term, committed partner to Bowtie for almost seven years. We’re very pleased to strengthen this partnership to support the next phase of growth,” Clement Lam, CEO of Sun Life Hong Kong, said. “Through our collaboration with Bowtie, we are combining cutting edge technology with deep insurance expertise to deliver meaningful transformation within Hong Kong’s health insurance industry.”

Sun Life has backed Bowtie since its founding in 2018 and has participated in all of the firm’s funding rounds. With this latest investment, Sun Life will increase its stake in Bowtie, which will continue operating as an associated company under its current leadership and branding.

“Sun Life’s continued partnership reinforces Bowtie’s position as a mission-driven insurer, leveraging technology to better serve customers through simple and transparent products,” said Michael Chan, Co-Founder and CEO of Bowtie.

Bowtie ranks first in Hong Kong’s direct channel for health insurance sales and holds the ninth spot across all distribution channels for new individual non-single premium policies, according to company data. Internationally, Bowtie is ranked No. 65 in the Financial Times High-Growth Companies Asia-Pacific 2025 list.

“These results demonstrate the ability of our digital model to deliver exceptional efficiency and impact to customers,” said Bowtie Co-Founder Fred Ngan. “We’re doubling down on core strengths, focusing on agentic artificial intelligence, health innovation, and talent development.”

Sun Life said the investment aligns with its broader strategy of collaborating with digital firms to enhance insurance accessibility.
