Tencent Games, one of the world’s leading gaming platforms, has joined the Playing for the Planet Alliance, a United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)-backed coalition of studios and publishers committed to reducing the environmental impact of the gaming industry and promoting climate action through gameplay.
The partnership underscores Tencent’s sustainability ambitions, including its pledge to achieve carbon neutrality across its operations and supply chain by 2030.
By aligning with the Alliance, Tencent aims to embed climate awareness into gaming experiences and development practices, expanding its influence in the global conversation on environmental stewardship.
Tencent’s involvement builds on its previous engagements in the Green Game Jam, the flagship initiative of the Alliance.
In 2025, its hit game Honor of Kings launched a forest-themed in-game campaign focused on ecological conservation.
Other titles, such as Carbon Island and PUBG MOBILE, have featured environmental themes in gameplay, with PUBG MOBILE’s “Play for Green” initiative garnering over 1.4 billion plays globally and winning the Media’s Choice Award at the 2024 Green Game Awards.
The company plans to support industry-wide sustainability efforts by developing training programs for game developers focused on energy-efficient operations and eco-conscious design.
It is also collaborating with the Alliance to develop an environmental awareness campaign targeting university students.
Tencent’s entry into the Alliance follows recognition at Gamescom 2024, where it received the Sustainability Award for its corporate responsibility efforts in gaming.
The Playing for the Planet Alliance, launched at the UN Climate Summit, now includes members with a combined reach of over 1 billion players globally.
Its members have pledged to implement green activations in games, cut emissions, and promote sustainable development through player engagement.
