Markel Insurance, the insurance arm of Markel Group Inc. (NYSE: MKL), has appointed Sucheng Chang as Managing Director for Asia Pacific, effective July 14.
He succeeds Christian Stobbs, who will remain with the company in a different capacity.
Chang will oversee Markel International’s regional operations spanning Singapore, Australia, Hong Kong, China, India, Malaysia and Dubai. He is tasked with driving strategic growth, enhancing underwriting profitability, and further elevating client and broker service.
The appointment comes as Markel’s Asia Pacific business posts rapid expansion under its “Accelerate Asia Pacific” strategy. Since 2019, gross written premiums have surged by roughly 600%, while headcount has nearly quadrupled.
“Sucheng is a highly strategic and well-respected leader in the Asia Pacific market,” said Andrew McMellin, President of Markel International. “His deep experience and leadership will be instrumental as we continue building on our growth momentum.”
Chang brings nearly two decades of experience in insurance and financial services. Most recently, he served as CEO of Aon Hong Kong. Prior to Aon, he held senior roles at Liberty Mutual, including Chief Distribution Officer, Global Retail Markets East, and CEO of Liberty Insurance Singapore. He holds an MBA from Yale University and a BA from Boston University.
“The Asia Pacific region represents a US$300 billion insurance market,” said Chang. “Markel’s growth trajectory, client-centric approach, and expanding footprint make this an exciting opportunity to lead its next phase of development.”
The appointment underscores Markel’s ambitions in the region as it deepens its footprint in high-growth insurance markets across Asia.
