Oryx Stainless Opens Green Recycling Facility in Johor, Malaysia

Oryx Stainless Group, a global leader in recycled stainless steel raw materials, officially opened its newest facility in Johor, reinforcing Malaysia’s status as a hub for green industrial transformation.

The Netherlands-based company said the plant will process 150,000 tonnes of stainless steel annually and contribute significantly to Malaysia’s low-carbon ambitions.

The site was inaugurated in a ceremony attended by Johor’s Chief Minister Dato’ Onn Hafiz Bin Ghazi, foreign diplomats, and Malaysian officials including MIDA representatives.

“Malaysia is key to our strategy of bringing high-quality, low carbon footprint stainless steel raw materials closer to the production centers of Asia,” said Tobias Kämmer, CEO of Oryx Stainless Holding. “Our investment is a commitment to long-term collaboration, green growth, and shared prosperity.”

The facility is expected to help reduce nearly 1 million tonnes of CO₂ annually, aligning with Malaysia’s target of cutting carbon intensity per GDP by 45% by 2030 and attracting RM300 billion in green investments.

MIDA CEO Datuk Sikh Shamsul Ibrahim welcomed the investment, citing it as a catalyst for Malaysia’s circular economy and creator of high-skill jobs. “Oryx Stainless strengthens both Johor’s industrial capabilities and Malaysia’s position in the global circular economy,” he said.

The plant uses Oryx’s “Smart Recycling” system to produce high-grade recycled blends tailored to over 150 alloy types, reducing reliance on carbon-intensive primary materials like ferronickel and ferrochrome. The company emphasized digitised, climate-neutral processes throughout the operation.

Local employment is also a focus, with trained Malaysian staff operating advanced equipment, including the country’s first special Sennebogen material handlers. Workforce numbers are expected to double by mid-2026, supported by partnerships with local universities.

Chairman Michael Pawlowski called the facility a milestone in Malaysia’s green transition. “Only in very few industries is the recycling rate as high as in stainless steel,” he said.
