Singapore-based Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) Smartcom is expanding into Indonesia, aiming to bring its mission-critical push-to-talk (PTT) communication solutions to a larger and more diverse market.
Founded in 2015, Smartcom has provided islandwide PTT services in Singapore through partnerships with TASSTA and Singtel. Its move into Indonesia is part of a broader strategy to scale its offerings and strengthen its regional footprint.
Indonesia, Southeast Asia’s largest economy, presents a significant opportunity for communication services, with a workforce of around 160 million and government initiatives such as the “100 Smart Cities” program.
The adoption of TASSTA’s solutions by the Indonesian police force and national railway operator underscores the country’s demand for reliable large-scale communication systems.
Smartcom is collaborating with Telkomsel, Indonesia’s largest telecommunications provider, to offer priority bandwidth for high-traffic situations, including national events and religious gatherings where network congestion poses challenges for communication.
The company is also providing ATEX-certified mobile devices for hazardous environments such as mining and oil and gas operations.
The expansion is supported by Enterprise Singapore’s Market Readiness Grant, which has helped Smartcom navigate regulatory requirements and market entry processes.
The company said it will continue to adjust its approach based on evolving industry demands and regulations in Indonesia.
As part of its strategy, Smartcom is seeking to integrate its PTT platform with software solutions for facilities management and service optimisation, and is working with Samsung Knox Mobile Device Management (MDM) to strengthen the cybersecurity of its mobile-based communication systems.
Smartcom’s model leverages cellular technology for PTT services, offering greater flexibility for cross-border operations compared to traditional trunking systems. The company plans to explore further sector expansions and partnerships as part of its regional growth efforts.
The official launch of Smartcom’s Indonesia expansion is scheduled for April 29 at BAKU Jakarta.
