Philippines: Mother and Son Arrested in Cebu with P170m Worth of Suspected Shabu

Authorities arrested a mother and son in Cebu City on Thursday after discovering 25 kilograms of suspected shabu, valued at P170 million, hidden in their vehicle at Pier 4.

The suspects, identified as Edward Loga, 41, a truck driver from Leyte, and his 63-year-old mother Edna, a Cebu City resident, arrived from Masbate aboard a ship.

Their car was flagged during a narcotics K9 inspection conducted by the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency-Central Visayas (PDEA-7) and other law enforcement agencies.

A Belgian Malinois K9, “Bayani,” alerted officers to the car, leading to the discovery of several packages of suspected illegal drugs in the trunk.

PDEA-7 Regional Director Alex Tablate said the drugs were likely intended for distribution in Cebu and nearby areas.

Edward claimed he was unaware of the contents, stating he was paid P20,000 to transport the vehicle from Metro Manila to Masbate and then to Cebu.

Investigators are tracing the source of the drugs and possible connections to organized groups.

Cebu City Police Chief Colonel Enrico Figueroa emphasized the significance of the seizure, noting the potential impact on the city’s anti-drug campaign.

The operation underscores ongoing efforts to curb the smuggling of illegal drugs into Cebu and Central Visayas. Further investigations are underway to identify the suppliers behind the shipment.
